What are the risk factors of diabetes?
If you are aged 40 or older, you have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and should get tested at least once every three years. You should be checked earlier/more often :
- If you are a member of any of the following high-risk groups: Aboriginal, Hispanic, Asian, South Asian or African descent.
- You are overweight, especially if most of your weight is around the middle of your body.
- Your mother or father, brother or sister has diabetes.
- You have any health complications related to diabetes, such as eye, nerve or kidney problems.
- You have given birth to a child whose weight is 4 kg. Gram. (9 pounds).
- You had gestational diabetes during your pregnancy.
- You have a history of impaired glucose tolerance.
- You have high blood pressure.
- You have high cholesterol or high amounts of other types of fats in your blood.
- You have been found to have any of the following conditions:* Polycystic Ovary Syrosis , Acanthosis nigricans (dark spots on skin).
What are the symptoms of Diabetes?
- Abnormal thirst
- Frequent urination
- Constant feeling of hunger
- Change in weight (more or less), extreme fatigue or lack of energy
- blurred vision
- Recurrent or recurring well infections
- Cuts or bruises that heal slowly. A tingling or tingling sensation in hands and feet. Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection.
Keep in mind that many people with type 2 diabetes do not have many of these symptoms. Be sure to consult your doctor to determine whether you are at risk.
